Tips for Making the Most Use of Your Programmable Thermostat

Last updated 1 year ago

The programmable thermostat is the unsung hero of energy efficiency, lower utility costs, and comfort of many a home. These pieces of technology offer a lot more than frustration-free temperature settings. They can offer the ability to change the way you handle your home heating and air conditioning for maximum savings.

The key to a thermostat’s performance naturally lies in its ability to be programmed. Only a few years ago, most homeowners were still using an iconic single-setting round thermostat. Some still are, and if you’re one of them, it’s definitely time for an upgrade.

  • In the old days, 68 degrees was “the” setting to use for energy efficiency. For some, this temperature is okay, but for others it’s barely comfortable. A programmable thermostat enables you to fine-tune your settings for when you’re away from home. You can set your thermostat even lower when the house is empty, and have it set to come on a few degrees higher about an hour or so before you arrive home. This way, you enjoy a truly comfortable temperature without sacrificing energy savings.

  • This doesn’t mean you should turn your thermostat off while you’re gone, however. An icy-cold home will use more energy and take longer to heat up than one that’s a few degrees below your comfort level.

  • Learn your thermostat inside and out. Ask your heating and air conditioning contractor to show you how to operate it beyond just the basics, so you can truly tailor your home’s climate for comfort.

  • Ask your air conditioning and heating specialist about zoning options, too—with multiple thermostat-controlled areas of your home active, you can realize even more savings and additional, individualized comfort.
